Mom's On
The Road
Again

This quilt was made to journal the trip that my Mother, Trieste Memmi Brandt, took to get her driving license back. At the age of 85 Mom's doctor revoked her driving privilege after her had pneumonia. She had to take the exam again. Through sweat and tears I taught her to parallel park. She passed the computerized exam and on-the-road portion and is still driving today, she's never had an accident.

This contemporary quilt started with my hand dyed background. I've added my digitized embroidered, commercial cottons make up the Broiderie Perse appliqué which is covered with vinyl. The steering wheel is English paper pieced, hand writing, machine appliqué, Shiva paint stick highlights, buttons, free unmarked machine quilting rounds out the design for this 32" by 36" piece. The "mirror" is detachable with a facsimile of her new driver's license attached to the back.

MOM loves it!
